Hollywood man Davie police say fled hit and run charged with DUI
A Hollywood man is accused impaired when he crashed into motorist and then left the scene.
Gabriel Tommie, 53, is facing charges that include DUI and failing to remain at the scene of an accident involving an injury.
Tommie was driving a white pickup on Jan. 27 when he struck a car at the intersection of South University Drive and StirlingRoad, injuring the driver and then driving away, according to the arrest report filed in the case.
Another motorist followed him and later told policeTommierana redlight atStirling and Davie roads before crashing the truck into a pole and walking away, the report stated.
Officers spotted Tommie outside a shopping plaza at 7126 Stirling Road and approached him. Whenhe sawtheir uniforms Tommie turned and walked away but they caught up and started to question him, investigators said.
He gave officers conflicting versions of what happened saying he drove, took a taxi, and walked to the shopping plaza, police said. of a being Davie
Tommie had glassy eyes, slurred speech, and a strong odor of alcohol on his breath and told officers he was coming from, “the bar,” investigators said.
He declined to take a voluntary field sobriety test but consented to a breath test at the Davie police station. His blood alcohol level registeredbetween.179and.182, more than twice the legal driving limit of .08, detectives said.
Thecrash witnesswhofollowedTommie identified him as the driver involved in the hit and run. The driver of the other vehicle suffered a hand injury and was treated at the hospital, police said.
Tommie was initially arrested and released in January andwas re-arrestedTuesday, jail records indicate.
Hewas found guilty in two previousDUI cases and had several driver’s license suspensions and revocations since 1988, according to the Florida Department of Highway Safety andMotor Vehicles.
Tommie also was convicted of cocaine possession in 2006, Florida Department of LawEnforcement records showed.
