U-School alum Wilson selected by Colts in round 2

FORT LAUDERDALE — Thirty-one of the 32 firstround picks on Thursday night had been made when Quincy Wilson walked out of his NFL draft watch party visibly upset. With one pick remaining and the phone not ringing, the reality had sunk in— he wasn’t going in the first round.

Minutes later, Chad Wilson, the father of the University School alum and University of Florida cornerback, addressed the gathering of approximately 50 friends, family and coaches in a quiet room at the Fort Lauderdale Marriott North.

“Whoever picks him,” he said, “is going to get a player with a serious chip on his shoulder.”

As the Indianpolis Colts selected Quincy Wilson in the second round on Friday (46th overall), Wilson looks to channel one night’s frustration into a lengthy career of NFL success.

“It’s definitely fuel to the fire, so I’m going to come into camp ready to go,” said Wilson. “It’s a lot of hard work. It finally paid off, but I’m not done yet.”

On Friday, Wilson took a comedic approach to coping with the first-round snub, wearing a shirt with a patched poop emoji and “happens” written underneath to read, for a PG version, “Stuff happens.”

But back in the same room where that “stuff” transpired less than 24 hours later, Wilson finally felt the joy every kid that grows up playing football aspires to experience, hearing his name called in the NFL draft. The Colts, who Wilson says actually didn’t speak with him much during the draft process, first called two picks before the selection was announced. As anticipation grew, Wilson was surrounded by loved ones with their phones out, capturing the moment.

He turned out to be the seventh cornerback and 14th defensive back taken, a list of secondary roamers that included UF teammate Marcus Maye.

Wilson was rated four stars by Rivals coming out of University School in Davie in 2014. He won a Class 3A state championship as a junior and played in the Under Armour All-America Game after his senior year.

He declared for the NFL draft after three seasons with the Gators where he posted six career interceptions — three in his junior campaign where he added 33 tackles, a sack and six pass break-ups to earn second-All-SEC honors.

“He is more than an exceptional football player,” said Roger Harriott, who coached Wilson, high highestplayer, at University School. “Quincy’s athletic talents put him in this fortunate position, but it’s his good nature and love for others that’s afforded him this NFL opportunity.”

Western’s Moreau to Redskins in 3rd

Former Western standout Fabian Moreau was drafted by the Washington Redskins in the third round Friday with the 81st overall pick.

Moreau, a cornerback out of UCLA, recorded 10 pass break-ups and two interceptions in 2016 to receive All-Pac-12 honorable mention.

It was a bounce-back year after Moreau’s 2015 campaign was cut short three games in with a Lisfranc injury in his left foot.

Moreau, who was on the last Wildcats team to reach regional playoffs before last year’s squad did it, was originally a three-star running back recruit for the Bruins in 2012. Hemade the switch to defense in his first college season and recorded five tackles on special teams as a reserve defensive back.
