There’s little room for improvement to I-595 exit

- Dr. Detour DETOUR, 7B

Doctor Detour answers your transportation questions.

Q: When the express lanes on Interstate 595 were built, the eastbound I-595 exit to Davie Road was reconfigured, creating huge backups. The state was supposed to make changes to improve the traffic flow through that intersection. To date nothing has been done. Can you find out when the work will be finished? Richard Silver, Boynton Beach

A: There is little room for improvement. Before the I-595 express lanes were built, there were four lanes approaching Davie Road from eastbound State Road 84 and I-595.

Now there are three lanes at the intersection that also handle traffic exiting I-595.

There are just two lanes, a sidewalk, a bicycle lane and Florida Power and Light power lines along eastbound State Road 84 between University Drive and Davie Road leaving drivers wedged in.

There is much more traffic using State Road 84 since the elimination of some ramps during the I-595 reconstruction and the completion of the missing link between Davie Road and State Road 7.

Broward County traffic engineers have adjusted the traffic signal timing to try to relieve some of the congestion but the longer green lights still favor westbound State Road 84 vehicles turning south on Davie Road so drivers don’t get stuck under I-595 when turning left.

Q: When is the construction on Wiles Road in Coral Springs scheduled to be completed? Seems like it's been going on forever and at a snail's pace. Edward G Kaspriske, Coral Springs
