Gators’ young defense struggles
ARLINGTON, Texas — The Florida Gators’ youth on defense was exposed early during Saturday’s 33-17 loss against Michigan.
Wolverines QB Wilton Speight caught first-year S Shawn Davis peeking into the backfield rather than picking up WR Tarik Black. An easy 46-yard touchdown resulted.
Even so, coach Jim McElwain and UF veterans were impressed with the 10 first-year freshmen who played, including eight on defense.
“I thought they did a great job coming out against a team like that,” fifth-year senior CB Duke Dawson said. “You have to be on point. As a freshman, you’re going to make mistakes. You have to find a way to fix them.”
The success of UF’s defense depends on it. Three first-year defensive backs — Wilson, Davis and CJ Henderson — were on the field at one time against Michigan.
The Wolverines completed two throws longer than 40 yards but finished just 12-of-26 passing for 218 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions — both pick-sixes.
“I’m proud of them,” senior DE Jordan Sherit said. “I thought they matured as the game went on. You can’t ask for more.”
Playmaking sophomore Chauncey Gardner’s health and availability are in question. After spending much of the fourth quarter on crutches, Gardner wore a protective boot on his left lower leg and was carted to the team bus.
