Bulletproof windows of car worth $200K foil burglar
A bicycle bandit easily broke the windows of four parked cars but couldn’t do the same with a luxury car outfitted with bulletproof glass, Broward Sheriff’s deputies say
The burglar used a blunt object, possibly a hammer, to attack windows of the nearly $200,000 2016 MercedesMaybach S600 at least seven times but the glass wouldn’t shatter.
Deputies said the man first struck on Sept. 12 at the Dania Beach City Hall parking garage at 100 W. Dania Beach Blvd., after many drivers had parked in garages across the county hoping to protect their vehicles from Hurricane Irma.
The driver of the Maybach, Evan Wiesel, 34, of North Miami Beach, who runs a limo service and finances the the same.
He said he usually parks his cars at a warehouse in Hollywood but said the area floods sometimes. With security cameras and a guard, he thought the garage was a better idea.
“I got a call that someone took a hammer to the car. I was pretty upset,” Wiesel said. “I figured it’d be a pretty safe place during Irma.”
Wiesel found his car Tuesday with one smash to the windshield and six more on his driver’s side window. Still, the windows that he described as double pane and shatter-proof, stopped the burglar, he said.
Security cameras first capture a man in a tank top and black pants riding a bicycle into the garage and going up to cars. The next night, possibly the same man, now wearing a black hoodie and black shorts, shows up again. car, wanted to do
Wiesel managed to get the windows repaired on Saturday for $2,200, he said.
Investigators also found fingerprints on the Maybach and searched the cars for DNA.
The drivers of a Mitsubishi Outlander, Honda Accord and BMW Z4 found their cars with a driver side and passenger side window smashed out, causing between $100 to $600 worth of damage. An Infiniti G35 also had a damaged spoiler and Jaguar X-type 3.0 had its trunk forced open, according to the report.
Investigators couldn’t find the owner of the Outlander. The other drivers reported nothing missing from their cars, according to the report.
