AROUND THE HORN

-

Indians: Francisco Lindor’s three-run homer keyed a 4-1 victory and three-game sweep of the Angels. The Indians have won 27 of their last 28 games. The Angels have lost four of five as they struggle to overtake the Twins for the final AL wild card.

Brewers: RHP Jimmy Nelson is expected to miss “a chunk” of next season after surgery to repair his partly torn labrum, GM David Stearns said. Nelson was injured while diving into first base as a runner. He already was ruled out for the season.

Dodgers: Former OF Raul Mondesi was sentenced to eight years in prison for embezzlement during his term as mayor of his hometown, San Cristobal, in the Dominican Republic. He also must pay a $1.3 million fine. The 1994 NL rookie of the year also played with the Blue Jays, the Yankees, the Braves, the Diamondbacks and the Pirates. He retired in 2005 with 271 home runs in 13 seasons.

Red Sox: A few hours after shutting out the Orioles 9-0 on Wednesday night, the Red Sox were assured of their second consecutive trip to the postseason when the Angels lost to the Indians. That guaranteed the Red Sox (88-64) at least an AL wild card. Of course, the Red Sox are looking to win the AL East, which they lead by three games over the Yankees with 10 to play. The Red Sox, pursuing their second straight division title and third in five years, join the Central champion Indians and West champion Astros in the AL playoffs. The two wild-card spots have yet to be filled. The Red Sox were off Thursday before opening a series Friday in Cincinnati.

MLB: Commissioner Rob Manfred said it was “extremely upsetting” that a young girl was struck in the face by a line drive Wednesday at Yankee Stadium. “MLB has worked with our clubs to expand the amount of netting in our ballparks,” he said. “We will redouble our efforts.” ... The Reds announced they would expand the netting at Great American Ball Park to the far end of the each dugout for the 2018 season.
