Lighting up the night

A musical 3-D laser show is set to transform the outside of Margate City Hall Friday night. The eight-minute event, similar to last year’s show, pictured above, is part of Winter Festival. The fest will feature photo ops with Santa and rides for kids.

A musical 3-D laser show will aim to wow the crowds Friday night by making toy soldiers, spinning mobiles and dancers appear several stories high on the side of a building.

The presentation at Margate City Hall, 5790 Margate Blvd., will run every 30 minutes, starting at 6 p.m. The last show is at 9:30 p.m.

“You really can’t imagine how spectacular this laser show is, and those who came out last year loved it,” said city spokeswoman Alison Saffold, estimating last year’s event drew about 10,000 people.

City Hall is three stories high, and the projection will be on the top two.

The $28,800 eight-minute show is part of Winter Festival, which also will feature photo opportunities with Santa for children.

Margate Boulevard — between State Road 7 and Northwest 58th Avenue — will be closed from 2 to 11 p.m. on Friday.

A Los Angeles-based company called PaintScaping creates the laser show, and its projects have included music videos and concerts. Owner Philippe Bergeron promised Margate’s show will have “magic” and the idea behind the technology is the “blend between reality and virtual.”

Shows have been set to the backdrop of mountains in Sedona, Ariz., the New York Public Library and inside the extravagant hallways of hotels in Vegas. and rides
