The new Marlins
The three players the Miami Marlins received from the New York Yankees in exchange for Giancarlo Stanton:
STARLIN CASTRO
Second baseman Height/weight: 6-2, 230 Throws/bats: Right/right Age: 27 2017 level: Major leagues 2017 stats: .300/.338/.454, 16 homers, 18 doubles, 63 RBI
Of note: The four-time All-Star (with the Chicago Cubs) is the only big leaguer coming to Miami, but Castro might not be a Marlin for long. The Marlins, still looking to shed payroll, could flip Castro for more prospects to one of any number of teams looking for second-base help. If Miami keeps Castro, he’ll slot right in as the replacement for Dee Gordon, traded this week to the Seattle Mariners, at second base. Castro has two years and $22 million left on his contract (plus a $16 million club option for 2020 or a $1 million buyout).
JORGE GUZMAN
Right-handed pitcher Height/weight: 6-2, 182 Throws/bats: Right/right Age: 21 2017 level: Short-Season A 2017 stats: 2.30 ERA, 1.04 WHIP, 88 strikeouts/18 walks (66 2/3 innings)
Of note: Guzman is the higher-regarded prospect of the two in this deal. His fastball sits in the upper 90s, and he’s been known to touch 102-103 mph regularly. But the high-ceiling Guzman is raw, years away from potentially reaching the majors. His slider and changeup are very much works in progress, and he hasn’t yet pitched in a full minor league season, spending 2017 with the Yankees’ Short-Season A affiliate. Guzman was originally a Houston Astros signee out of the Dominican Republic in 2014. New York picked him up a little over a year ago, as one of two players received from the Astros for catcher Brian McCann.
JOSE DEVERS
Shortstop Height/weight: 6-0, 155 Throws/bats: Left/right Age: 18 2017 level: DSL/GCL 2017 stats: .245/.336/.342, 1 homer, 9 doubles, 16 steals (3 caught stealings)
Of note: Devers, even further from the majors than Guzman, is essentially a lottery ticket. He split 2017 between the Yankees’ Dominican Summer League and Gulf Coast League teams. Devers is the cousin of Boston Red Sox third baseman Rafael Devers.
