Burglar enters Weston home through baby’s bedroom window

- By Linda Trischitta Staff writer

The nursery in the Weston home decorated with pink accents seemed perfect except for one thing: An intruder who at first glance looked like Santa Claus as he stepped through the window.

But this was no Santa. He’s a burglary suspect disguised by a long, beard-like bandanna who was recorded by a video camera.

“This is every parent’s worst nightmare, the fact that your baby’s window would be where someone chooses to break into your home,” Broward Sheriff’s spokeswoman Gina Carter said Wednesday.

Though a blanket and toy can be seen in the baby’s crib at the house in the 16200 block of La Costa Drive, near the Bonaventure Golf Club, the child was not home during the breakin at the single-story residence, Carter said.

The video also shows the man wearing a dark-colored hooded sweatshirt and bright orange gloves while rummaging through drawers in the baby’s room at lunchtime on Feb. 7.

Burglars often like to commit their crimes during weekdays when homeowners may be at work, Carter said.

Deputies found a tool of some sort had been used to pry open the nursery window and a panel had been cut out of a screened porch, a police report said.

The suspect left the house through a rear sliding glass door. Jewelry worth $500 was missing from the master bedroom of the house, the report said.

The Sheriff’s Office asks anyone with information about the suspect to call Detective Danielle Quinones at 954-626-4008. Broward County Crime Stoppers, at 954-493-8477, will accept anonymous tips, and may pay up to $3,000 for information that leads to an arrest.
