Doctors say Farquhar is ‘progressing well’

- By Teddy Greenstein Chicago Tribune

White Sox officials say reliever Danny Farquhar “is progressing well” after undergoing surgery Saturday to address the ruptured aneurysm he suffered Friday in the dugout at Guaranteed Rate Field.

“Farquhar has use of his extremities, is responding appropriately to questions and commands and is speaking to doctors and his family,” the Sox said about the Archbishop McCarthy High alum in a statement released Monday afternoon.

Farquhar, 31, remains a patient at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago after suffering a brain hemorrhage.

“Danny remains in critical but neurologically stable condition in the ICU unit at Rush,” the statement said. “Farquhar’s wife, Lexie, and family members are present at the hospital as he continues to receive treatment and close monitoring by the neurosurgical team. He is expected to remain in the neurosurgical ICU at Rush for the next few weeks.”

Fans interested in sending a get-well message can address it to Farquhar at Guaranteed Rate Field, 333 W. 35th St., Chicago 60616.

Earlier Monday, the Sox placed Farquhar on the 60-day disabled list, as expected.

Not expected was the decision to put Miguel Gonzalez on the 10-day DL with right rotator cuff inflammation. Gonzalez (0-3, 12.41 ERA) had been expected to start Monday night against the Mariners.

Instead Carson Fulmer (0-1, 7.50) has been moved up a day and will get the ball at 7:10 p.m. at Guaranteed Rate Field.

The Sox also purchased the contract of righthander Chris Beck from Triple-A Charlotte, where he allowed two earned runs in nine innings and limited opponents to a .129 average.

Beck is 4-4 with a 6.38 ERA over parts of three major-league seasons (2015-17) with the Sox.

Sox players spoke about going to see Farquhar in the hospital and hope to at a later time.

“Besides him being a great teammate and part of this brotherhood, I have to be respectful of his family,” Fulmer said. “He’s a brother, he’s one of our teammates and we’re all here for him and his family.”

Farquhar, who was born in Pembroke Pines, continues to receive an outpouring of support from his friends and extended baseball family.

“The first thing I thought of was just how good of a father he is,” Rays infielder Brad Miller, a former teammate, told the Tampa Bay Times. “Obviously a great teammate; I played with him forever. But he’s got three little kids, and they were his world. So really just thinking about him like that.

“I’ve gotten a bunch of texts from guys that we’ve been playing with — Logan (Morrison), Jake Odorizzi, Richie Shaffer, guys like that. Everybody is just in shock and can’t believe it. Everybody is thinking about him and wants him to pull through. Hopefully we get some good news soon.”
