UM recruiting prime talent all over the country

CORAL GABLES — With spring football and the NFL draft behind them, the Hurricanes’ focus shifts now to their future, namely recruiting.

With high school football teams across the state going through drills ahead of their respective spring games, Mark Richt said Tuesday that Hurricanes coaches are fanned out across the country. Several — including tight ends coach Todd Hartley – have posted tidbits from their travels on social media, giving fans and prospects alike a small look into the process currently unfolding.

“We’ll be all over the state, all over the country, really,” Richt said Tuesday during a radio appearance with WQAM-560’s Joe Rose. “If we have kids that are interested in us, we’ll go as far as Oregon if we need to. We’re getting after it. It’s a fun part of the job because you get to figure out who you’re going to track down and try to go get them.”

As the spring evaluation period continues, the Hurricanes — who won their first Coastal Division title in program history last fall and are coming off a 10-3 season — have secured verbal commitment­s from 11 prospects for their 2019 recruiting class. That’s good enough to give them a top-10 class, but Richt and his staff would like to do even better, especially considerin­g that ACC rivals Florida State and Clemson are both ranked higher in the early recruiting rankings put together by 247sports.com.

At this point, the Hurricanes have yet to land a five-star prospect, but they have three four-star recruits in the fold, including line-
