■ Tigers: Though pitching coach ChrisBosio said hewas fired over a misunderst­anding, The Athletic reported that he directed a racial slur at a clubhouse attendant. Another team employee witnessed the incident, and Bosio was provided an opportunit­y to apologize but declined, the report said. Bosio said the attendant heard him say “monkey” and took offense, but the coach asserted hewas referring to pitcher Daniel Stumpf by his nickname, “Spider Monkey.” However, Stumpf said, “Spider Monkey is not a nickname I have been called or I’m familiar with.” The Detroit Free Press said “multiple players and coaches” had never heard Stumpf called “SpiderMonk­ey.”

■ Red Sox: Veteran 1B/OF Steve Pearce was acquired in a trade with the Blue Jays. The Red Sox sent minor-league INF Santiago Espinal to the Jays and received cash to help cover Pearce’s contract. Pearce, 35, hit .291 with four home runs and 16 RBIs in 26 gamesfor theJays this season. He can become a free agent after the World Series.

■ Angels: MikeTrout, back inCF for Friday’s game against the Orioles after a sprained right index finger forced him into a career-long nine-game stint as a DH, hit hisMLB-best 24th home run in the first inning. ... Tebow was hitting .261 with five home runs and 30 RBIs in 67 games but was batting .318 in June.

■ Yankees: RHP Masahiro Tanaka threw 48 pitches in his first simulated game since being sidelined by two strained hamstrings. Facing minor-leaguers, he struck out four in the hitless outing. “I was able to throw with force and use allmy pitches,” Tanaka said.
