ACC honors for Jackson
Former Boynton quarterback named male Athlete of the Year
After a record-setting career at Louisville, former Boynton Beach quarterback Lamar Jackson added another achievement to his long line of accomplishments.
On Thursday, he was named the Atlantic Jackson Coast Conference’s male
Athlete of the Year. Last year, he threw for 3,489 yards and 25 touchdowns and ran for 1,561 rushing yards and 17 touchdowns
The 6-foot-3, 212-pound Jackson, who was born in Pompano Beach, is the only player in NCAA history to throw for 3,000 yards and rush for 1,000 yards in consecutive seasons. In 2016, Jackson became the youngest player to win the Heisman and the first from Palm Beach or Broward counties. That year, he passed for 3,390 yards and 30 touchdowns while running for 1,538 yards and 21 touchdowns.
Jackson declared for the NFL draft after his junior season and was taken by the Baltimore Ravens with the No. 32 pick in April. He is the first Palm Beach County player selected in the first round since Glades Central’s Kelvin Benjamin was chosen by the Carolina Panthers in 2014 with the 28th pick.
Jackson received 19 votes on a panel of league media. He edged Georgia Tech baseball catcher Joey Bart (18) and N.C. State football defensive end Bradley Chubb (17).
Notre Dame basketball player Arike Ogunbowale, who led the Fighting Irish to the NCAA championship, won the female award. srichardson@ sun-sentinel.com; On Twitter @shandelrich
