Cardinal Gibbons’ big tight end Nikolas Ognenovic committed to Kentucky late Wednesday night in a decision that will keep him united with his quarterback in college.

Ognenovic was torn between Kentucky, where QB Nik Scalzo is committed, and Pittsburgh, where Chiefs running back Vincent Davis has pledged.

“Hardest decision ever and I’ve been thinking about it for the longest time now,” said Ognenovic, the 6-foot-6, 235-pound, threestar pass-catching target. “There’s no wrong choice and no bad choice. Both are more than amazing schools. I love Pitt and I love Kentucky, I just had to go with what my heart was telling me.”

Ognenovic took visits to the two schools over backto-back weekends in June. He spent the following three weeks convening with his family to discuss the decision.

“We went through pros and cons and pretty much everything you can imagine,” he said. “I knew I was ready to be a part of the Big Blue Nation.”

Last season as a junior, Ognenovic had eight receptions for 57 yards and a touchdown, but after the Chiefs’ four leading receivers all graduated, he is expected to see a major boost in production.

Initially falling behind due to a leg injury sustained in his first junior varsity game as a freshman and reaggravating the injury during basketball season to miss that spring, Ognenovic has steadily improved his route-running and ball skills to complement his natural physical traits. dfurones@ sunsentinel.com / @DavidFurones_
