Quick slant: Florida Atlantic is fresh off a bye, needing another important Conference USA win against a familiar foe. FAU has never won at Marshall — beating the Thundering Herd for the first time ever at home last season — and is 0-3 on the road entering Saturday.
About FAU (3-3, 1-1 C-USA): The Owls were dealt a devastating blow ahead of this one, losing senior linebacker and defensive leader Azeez Al-Shaair, the program’s all-time leading tackler, to a torn ACL. That defense, which has struggled, will have to recover quickly as redshirt freshman quarterback Chris Robison seeks his first strong performance away from the friendly confines of Boca Raton.
About Marshall (4-2, 2-1): The two losses for the Thundering Herd have come against No. 16 N.C. State and Middle Tennessee State, the team that also dealt FAU its lone conference loss. They have good run-pass balance on offense and possess a physical front seven defensively, which has produced 20 sacks.
THREE THINGS TO WATCH
■ With his next rushing touchdown, junior running back Devin “Motor” Singletary ties Eric Crouch (Nebraska, 1998-2001) and Colin Kaepernick (Nevada, 2007-10) for 11th on the NCAA FBS list with 59. Another one — and he creeps into the top 10, tying Oregon’s Royce Freeman, a Denver Broncos draft pick in the last NFL draft, with 60.
■ FAU placed an emphasis on having defensive linemen get to the quarterback and find a loose ball after a sack this week in practice. The Owls have just seven sacks and seven takeaways through six games this season.
■ Marshall wide receiver Tyre Brady used to play for the Miami Hurricanes and, before that, at Homestead South Dade. Current Owls players remember playing him in high school. Brady has 41 receptions, for 530 yards and six touchdowns entering Saturday.
