Sears in Boyn­ton Beach to close

Store to join 39 oth­ers clos­ing around the coun­try af­ter com­pany filed for bank­ruptcy

The Sears depart­ment store in­side the Boyn­ton Beach Mall is among the lat­est to be slated for clo­sure by Sears Hold­ing, which filed for bank­ruptcy re­or­ga­ni­za­tion in mid-Oc­to­ber.

The store, at 801 N. Congress Ave., will join 39 other stores clos­ing around the coun­try: 29 Sears and 11 Kmart lo­ca­tions, ac­cord­ing to a com­pany an­nounce­ment on Nov. 8.

The Sears Auto Store in Boyn­ton Beach, which is near the depart­ment store lo­ca­tion, also will close, as will all other auto stores at the clos­ing Sears store lo­ca­tions.

Em­ploy­ees have been told the af­fected stores will be closed in Fe­bru­ary, the com­pany said.

Liq­ui­da­tion sales at th­ese lo­ca­tions are ex­pected to be­gin late next week.

Sears has seven depart­ment stores left in South Florida, in­clud­ing in Palm Beach Gar­dens, Co­ral Springs, Fort Laud­erdale, Pem­broke Pines, Hialeah, Mi­ami and Cut­ler Bay.

The store at the West­field Broward Mall in Plan­ta­tion closed this sum­mer. And a list of 142 un­prof­itable clo­sures was an­nounced in Oc­to­ber, in­clud­ing one Kmart, at 12350 SW Eighth St. in Mi­ami. Those clo­sures are ex­pected to be com­pleted by year’s end.
