After 19 days on the lam, an 18-year-old who escaped from the Broward Juvenile Detention Center is back in police custody — this time in adult jail. Miguel Granados-Palencia crawled under a fence and disappeared into a heavily wooded area when he made his escape on the morning of Nov. 8 from the detention center at 222 NW 22nd Ave. in Fort Lauderdale, records show.

The North Lauderdale teen’s whereabouts were unknown and a Broward Circuit Court judge signed an arrest warrant for Granados-Palencia on Nov. 14.

Margate police caught up with the teen Nov. 27 after a woman called to report that she saw someone in an orange hoodie peering into her neighbor’s car and trying the door handles on vehicles, according to an arrest report.

Granados-Palencia was wearing black gloves and had two knives and a flathead screwdriver on him when he was arrested at 4:14 a.m. in the 600 block of South State Road 7, the report said.

Records show the teen has gone by a number of aliases. He was booked into the Broward Main Jail as Charly Smith-Martinez, 20. Aside from the escape, Granados-Palencia was charged under the Smith-Martinez name with possession of burglary tools, prowling and marijuana possession, according to court records.

He is also wanted for charges in Brevard County and Nassau County, New York, documents show. A fuel leak caused a boat to explode into flames while its owner was working on it Tuesday afternoon, fire officials said.
