Derby 11th Dolphin on IR; Delaney claimed

- By Safid Deen South Florida Sun Sentinel

The Miami Dolphins placed their 11th player on injured reserve Tuesday and claimed a former University of Miami standout.

Fourth-year tight end A.J. Derby’s season is over after he dealt with a foot injury for much of the year. Derby became a sparingly used tight end for the Dolphins after he suffered the injury during a Week 3 game against the Oakland Raiders.

While Derby was to return against able the Green Bay Packers in Week 10 on Nov. 11, he did not play in the past two games for the Dolphins. Derby was marked inactive for Miami’s 21-17 win over the Buffalo Bills last Sunday.

Without Derby for much of the season, the Dolphins have relied on former FSU standout Nick O’Leary and rookies Mike Gesicki and Durham Smythe at the position. O’Leary, who was claimed in September, signed a one-year extension that will keep him with the Dolphins in 2019.

To fill Derby’s roster spot, the Dolphins claimed former Hurricanes cornerback Dee Delaney off waivers.

Delaney, who spent one season with UM last year, signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars as an undrafted free agent and has spent this season on Jacksonville’s practice squad and active roster. He was waived by the team Monday to make room for running back Leonard Fournette’s return from a onegame suspension.

Delaney becomes sixth cornerback on the the Dolphins roster and could serve as a viable option on special teams while rookie cornerback Cornell Armstrong recovers from a knee injury he suffered against Buffalo.

The Dolphins have also added former Louisville linebacker James Burgess Jr., a former Homestead High standout, to their practice squad.

Burgess signed with the Dolphins as an undrafted free agent in 2016 and spent the last two seasons with the Cleveland Browns before being released in October.
