Businesses damaged, roof partially collapses in fire

- By Doug Phillips South Florida Sun Sentinel Staff writer Joe Cavaretta contributed to this report.

An early morning fire that ripped through a commercial warehouse plaza in Oakland Park severely damaged several businesses and partially collapsed a roof at the center of the blaze.

It was in the 2 a.m. hour Monday when Oakland Park Fire Rescue was called to the warehouse complex at 3442 NE Second Avenue, north of Oakland Park Boulevard and east of North Andrews Avenue.

Because of the fire’s intensity, they were soon joined by units from Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue and Pompano Beach Fire Rescue with support from Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue.

“They told me they dumped over 70,000 gallons of water,” said Michael Clancy, who owns a custom cabinet shop right next to an auto body shop that appears to have had the most damage from the fire.

“They had a partial roof collapse on the unit next door,” Clancy said, referring to the body shop.

Images provided by Oakland Park Fire Rescue showed multiple warehouse bays with heavy damage — investigators look over the scene of a including one containing a vehicle that appeared to be severely burned.

There were no immediate reports of damage or word on what may have sparked the blaze.

Four of the business bays were damaged to the point of being uninhabitable and had red stickers indicating

that affixed to them.

After daybreak, investigators from Oakland Park and the Office of the State Fire Marshal were examining the severely burned vehicle — a van — just outside the back of the warehouse bays.
