It’s still cold enough in the nation’s midsection and in the Northeast that people are seeking warm weather get-aways to South Florida and the Florida Keys.
Key West International Airport this weekend welcomed two new direct flights on American Airlines from Chicago O’Hare International Airport and from Philadelphia International Airport.
The first arriving passengers Saturday received a water canon salute from firefighters stationed at the airport and commemorative hats from airport workers.
“We are very excited to have American Airlines provide nonstop service to each destination further connecting Key West directly to American Airlines network,” Monroe County’s Director of Airports, Richard Strickland, said in a statement.
Both routes will operate on Saturdays through Aug. 31. The newly added flights will be operated on an EMB-175 aircraft that can carry 76 passengers.
Key West International Airport also provides direct service to Charlotte, Newark, Washington, D.C., Dallas, Atlanta, Orlando, Fort Lauderdale, Miami, and Tampa.
In 2018, Key West International Airport experienced a 14 percent growth in total passengers.
