After captivating friends with homemade meals in their backyard garden, a couple has re-created the heartfelt experience for guests beyond their inner circle.
“It’s rustic and colorful. The patio is a covered yard with a tree, flowers, herbs and plants, water fountain and arbor,” says chef Vagner DeCarli, who runs the cafe with Carlos Ribeiro de Castro. “Everything was made by our hands. We built the tables and bar. Even the placemats were made by Carlos’ 92-year-old grandma. We put a lot of love into every detail.”
DeCarli grew up in Brazil, cooking alongside his Polish family.
“I was raised on the farm, always drinking the freshest coffee and eating homemade food,” he says. “At Bulegreen, we brew coffee at the table in pots that in Portuguese are called ‘bule.’ It’s a provincial way from the Brazilian farms — old fashionedstyle water poured over freshly roasted, ground coffee.”
Another Brazilian treat from his family is glutenfree cheese bread made with yucca root flour ($4.90).
“We serve brunch and breakfast all day long,” DeCarli says. “Our menu is eclectic and has a mix of cultures with our own way to do it.”
Signatures are pink egg salad sandwich ($7.40), waffle BLT ($7.90), banana melted cheese sandwich ($8.90), croque madame with fried egg ($9.90), Waffacai waffle crowned with açaí and bananas ($10.90) and Caprese waffle with pesto ($12.90).
The country-style pie with veggies ($10.90) or chicken ($12.90) originates from de Castro’s Brazilian mother, who makes daily cakes such as lime pistachio or banana cocoa oatmeal ($5.50).
Hours are from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily, except Sundays.
