Kravis Center shutting down portions of West Palm Beach arts center on May 20

- By Phillip Valys

If you’re planning to attend a show between now and November at the Kravis Center, don’t be surprised if the layout looks unfamiliar.

The downtown West Palm Beach performing arts center announced on Tuesday that its Okeechobee Boulevard entrance will close and its box office will relocate temporarily as part of the venue’s $50 million expansion and upgrades.

The closures will begin Monday, May 20, and last until Nov. 4 – just before its 2019-2020 season kickoff - and shut down car and pedestrian traffic on Okeechobee. During the reshuffling, the Kravis’ main box office next to Dreyfoos Hall also will relocate inside the Rinker Playhouse.

The efforts are part of Kravis’ major overhaul, dubbed the “Kravis 2020: The Future is Now Campaign,” which aims to bring faster valet service, better parking, shorter lines and sharper curb appeal to the 27-year-old center. Kravis staffers expect the center will finish upgrades by October 2020.

The Kravis Center’s 2019-2020 season will include Broadway national tours of “Summer: The Donna Summer Musical,” “Come From Away,” “Miss Saigon,” “A Bronx Tale,” “The Play That Goes Wrong” and “Fiddler on the Roof.” A concert by rock veterans Incubus on Dec. 1, a show from standup Daniel Tosh on Nov. 29 and a two-night stand by comedian Jim Gaffigan, Dec. 21-22, also have been announced.

Here’s how the Kravis Center will transform over the next six months:

The only access to the Kravis Center’s entrance will be through the main garage on the Tamarind Avenue and Iris Street entrances, and it’s self-parking only. No valet is available.

The Kravis’ main box office, adjacent to Dreyfoos Hall, will relocate inside the Rinker Playhouse. The box office will be open 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday and will be closed Saturday and Sunday, save for the occasional weekend show.

Ticket buyers can still purchase tickets online via Kravis.org and pay-by-phone at 561-832-7469 and 800-572-8471. The center’s box office will be open only two hours prior to showtime.

Visiting the Kravis for special events and youth education programs, such as ArtsCamp and Broadway Artists Intensives? Those will continue in the Cohen Pavilion, with some performances shifted to the Rinker Playhouse.
