Ports to practice anti-terrorism drills overnight Wednesday
Fort Lauderdale – If you live or work near one of South Florida’s ocean ports don’t be alarmed by all the emergency activity overnight Wednesday, officials said.
Port Everglades, PortMiami and the Port of Palm Beach will be taking part in the regional Operation Heat Shield III antiterrorism exercise designed to coordinate emergency response efforts in the wake of potential attacks targeting ports, but it’s only a drill, law enforcement agencies said.
The full-scale exercise will start at 6 p.m. Wednesday and end by 6 a.m. on Thursday. There will be lots of police and fire rescue personnel and equipment in use during the drill, organizers said.
There will be a series of unique attack scenarios at 19 locations throughout South Florida to test specific capabilities of emergency responders, officials said.
Planning began in August with capability assessments and training courses followed by tabletop exercises in March to detect and plug possible gaps in preparation at emergency operations centers in all three counties.
The goal of the exercise is to ensure emergency responders are ready to minimize the impact of a complex coordinated terrorist attack and recover quickly afterward.
