DAVIE — A man who police say was holding a woman “against her will” was shot and killed by a Davie police officer during a SWAT call out Friday.
Special response units were called to a mobile home community at 4701 Southwest 73rd Avenue about 2:30 a.m. when a disturbance was reported, Davie Police Chief Dale Engle said at a briefing in the neighborhood where the hours-long incident unfolded.
“As we negotiated with the individual inside the house, it was brought to our attention that he was not alone, that there was a female in there that we believed was being held against her will,” Engle said.
When the negotiations didn’t resolve the issue, Engle said, “one of our officers discharged his weapon.”
The man who was shot didn’t survive. Engle did not know if he was armed and his identity has not been released.
At the scene, a man named Moises Mena said his daughter was the woman inside the residence with the man who was fatally shot and he indicated
will.”
she was live-streaming on Facebook during the ordeal.
“My daughter says that somebody tried to kill the boyfriend,” Mena said.
On the noisy Facebook stream the woman could be heard saying, “We paid the rent and everything and they keep on bothering us,” before what sounds like a gunshot is heard.
Following the incident, she was taken into police custody and was “providing information,” Engle said.
The police shooting is being investigated by an outside agency, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
