Wellington held to two hits, shut out

WELLINGTON — The Wellington softball team’s playoff run came to an end as undefeated Winter Springs erupted for a four-run third inning and eight-run fifth, cruising past the host Wolverines 13-0 in five innings during a Class 8A regional final on Friday.

Wellington (26-3) was unable to continue its momentum after senior Katie Schmidt’s walk-off single lifted the Wolverines to a 3-2 victory against Bartow in the regional semifinal.

The Wolverines’ offense was limited to two hits Friday. Junior catcher Reagan Conley and sophomore right fielder Jolie Skivington both had singles.

“It was the best team we have played against all season, and they were undefeated for a reason,” Wellington coach Mark Boretti said. “They really can hit and they had a great pitcher. We had a great season.”

Wellington senior captain and shortstop Sarah Longley, a Florida signee, was one of the team’s leaders throughout her high school career.

“This season was not how we wanted it to turn out, but we made a long run for it,” Longley said. “I made a lot of great memories.”

The Bears (29-0) quickly opened the scoring in the first as Kaley Mudge hit a leadoff triple to center and scored on Briana Driscoll’s RBI single.

The Bears’ offense was on display in a four-run third inning. After Wellington junior pitcher Kate DeSimone issued a leadoff walk, Mudge crushed a two-run home run to right to make it 3-0. Kennedi Gaton also ripped a two-run blast to left to extend the lead to 5-0.

Winter Springs junior pitcher Aynslie Furbush, a Mississippi commit, tossed a complete game two-hitter with eight strikeouts.
