Motorcyclist shot in road rage incident, police say
FORT LAUDERDALE A Honda Civic driver is accused of shooting and killing a motorcyclist in Fort Lauderdale in a case of road rage.
Officials on Monday identified Cerrone Alonso, 40, of Pembroke Pines, as the man who was shot dead.
Alonso had a fatal encounter Thursday night with Harrison Braga DaCosta in the 6200 block of Northwest Ninth Avenue, also known as Powerline Road, Fort Lauderdale police said.
About 9 p.m., witnesses said, DaCosta, 29, of Delray Beach, used his Honda to pin Alonso’s motorcycle against a curb. DaCosta then got out of the car and shot Alonso several times, Assistant State Attorney Eric Linder said Friday during a court hearing.
After bullets flew, DaCosta drove away, Linder said.
DaCosta faces a charge of murder without premeditation. Fort Lauderdale police have not released DaCosta’s arrest report, nor have detectives described what may have prompted the road rage.
Fort Lauderdale police said DaCosta was found a short time later in Oakland Park and was taken into custody.
While DaCosta watched the bond court proceedings Friday on a video feed from inside the jail, he laughed at Linder’s description of what happened and shook his head as if to say ‘No.’
DaCosta is pleading self-defense and claimed that Alonso hit him or threatened to strike him with a rock or some other weapon, Linder said.
The area of the shooting, near the intersection of Powerline Road and West Cypress Creek Road, was searched, Linder said. Rocks, bricks or large stones that could have been used as weapons were not found. Investigators did find two 9 mm bullet casings in the road near the motorcycle, he said.
Defense attorney Lilas Ayandeh sought a bond for DaCosta, who lives with his mother and has relatives in South Florida.
“He’s not a flight risk,” Ayandeh said.
