Gooden charged with DWI
NEWARK, N.J. — Fallen Mets superstar Dwight Gooden was once again warming a bench in a New Jersey jail cell Monday — just hours before he was supposed to show up in court for a June drug arrest, officials said.
Newark police tagged the hero hurler for drunk driving after he was seen rolling the wrong way down a one way street near Ferry and Vincent streets in the Irondale section of Newark in a 2012 black Chrysler at about 11 p.m., a department spokesman said.
When cops pulled him over, Gooden — who pitched the Mets to their most recent World Series championship in 1986 — appeared drunk, officials said.
The officers took him into custody and then called medics after he complained about a medical issue. He was taken to University Medical Center for further evaluation.
He was charged intoxicated.
“It’s sad to see the continued problems of this former Mets’ star but it’s an example of the persistent scourge of drugs and alcohol in this country and the stranglehold they have on addicts,” Newark Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose said in a statement.
Gooden, 54, whose continuing drug saga drove him out of a Hall of Fame career, was arrested just hours before he had a court appearance in Holmdel, N.J., where he was arrested on June 7 for drug possession. Nationals: RHP Max Scherzer is slated to start Thursday against the Rockies after recovering from inflammation under his right shoulder. The 34year-old threw a bullpen session before the game against the Rockies on Monday was postponed. “He felt good today, did his regular routine, so he’s scheduled to pitch Thursday if everything goes well,” manager Dave Martinez said. An All-Star for the seventh straight season, Scherzer is 9-5 with a 2.30 ERA but has not pitched since July 6.
Indians: The 3-year-old boy hit by a foul ball in Cleveland last weekend is showing no signs of serious injury, the team said. The boy, identified by the team as Henry, was hit by a line drive off the bat of All-Star SS Francisco Lindor in the sixth inning of a 5-4 win over the Royals on Sunday. An adult holding the child left the seating area immediately afterward. The boy was released from a hospital on Sunday evening.
Rockies: The team brought up 1B Yonder Alonso, 32, from Triple-A Albuquerque. He was signed to a minor league contract on July 10, a week after he was released by the White Sox. Alonso hit .419 in nine games for Albuquerque with three doubles, one triple, two home runs, and 12 RBIs. He batted .178 with seven homers and 27 RBIs in 67 games for the White Sox this season.
Dodgers: The team plans to welcome the AllStar Game back to Dodger Stadium with a $100 million renovation of their historic ballpark. The Dodgers unveiled the logo for next year’s Midsummer Classic and their latest renovation plans at their 57year-old home, the majors’ third-oldest park. The primary addition will be a center field plaza area spanning nearly 2 acres behind the outfield fences, creating what Dodgers President Stan Kasten described as a “front door” to the famously tough-to-access hillside park. The plaza will include food, entertainment and a statue of Sandy Koufax, which will join a statue of Jackie Robinson already on the property.
Cubs: LHP Cole Hamels was slated to make a rehab start Tuesday for Triple-A Iowa at San Antonio. He has been sidelined by a strained left oblique muscle . ... C Willson Contreras (sprained right foot) will be activated and available for Wednesday afternoon’s series finale, perhaps to start behind the plate catching LHP Jon Lester.
Mariners: 2B Dee Gordon was placed on the 10-day injured list with a strained left quadriceps, a day after leaving after the second inning of a win over the Rangers. Gordon said he strained the muscle rounding first base. Manager Scott Servais said an MRI showed the injury will keep Gordon sidelined several weeks. He is batting .280 with 16 stolen bases.
Phillies: RHP Tommy Hunter had season-ending surgery to repair the flexor tendon in his right arm. Hunter, 33, injured his flexor tendon in spring training and was limited this year to only 5 1⁄3 scoreless innings over five appearances.
