UM VS. VIRGINIA
This was known it would be a key point in the Miami Hurricanes’ season from the start — the back-to-back home games against UM’s ACC Coastal Virginia foes, one on a Saturday and the other the following Friday night in early October.
If there was a two-game stretch to point to as most important in determining where Miami would be headed this season, this would surely be it.
After having a disastrous start nearly turn into a historic comeback before losing to Virginia Tech, Miami is now trying to save its season.
With the quick turnaround, the Hurricanes have to do it against No. 20 Virginia. Here’s a quick look at Friday’s matchup:
When: Friday, 8
Where: Hard Rock Stadium
TV: ESPN
Radio: 560-AM, 990-AM (Spanish)
Weather: 80 degrees, 24 percent chance of precipitation Online: sun-sentinel.com/um; @DavidFurones_ on Twitter Quick slant: Miami gets a shot at redemption against Virginia, which derailed the Hurricanes’ season a year ago when the UM October loss in Charlottesville was the first of four consecutive defeats. It comes on a short week for Miami after an emotional, heartbreaking 42-35 loss to Virginia Tech on Saturday. The last time a ranked Virginia team played at Miami, the Cavaliers steamrolled the Hurricanes, 48-0, in the last game at the Orange Bowl in 2007. About Miami (2-3, 0-2 ACC): The Hurricanes can’t get eliminated in the ACC Coastal on Friday night, but a loss would likely put UM out of the race with Virginia. With Jarren Williams hampered by an upper extremity injury, N’Kosi Perry gets the start at quarterback.
About No. 20 Virginia (4-1, 2-0): The Cavaliers rank No. 13 nationally in total defense. They are led offensively by junior quarterback Bryce Perkins, who is completing 66.5 percent of his passes for 1,177 yards, eight touchdowns and six interceptions, plus 164 rushing yards and two more scores. They come in fresh off a bye week following their 35-20 loss at then-No. 10 Notre Dame on Sept. 28.
