Goaltender acquired in deal a standout at Cal

Less than four months from its MLS debut, Inter Miami CF’s roster continues to take shape.

For the second second straight day, the team landed another player via trade, acquiring goalkeeper Drake Callender from the San Jose Earthquake­s. In exchange for the Homegrown Player Rights to Callender, Miami is sending its second round pick of the 2020

MLS SuperDraft.

On Monday, the team acquired midfielder Victor Ulloa from FC Cincinnati and the No. 1 pick in Stage One of the 2019 MLS Re-Entry Draft in a trade with FC Cincinnati. In exchange, Miami sent $50,000, a natural thirdround pick in the 2020 SuperDraft and the No. 26 pick in Stage One of the Re-Entry Draft to Cincinnati.

Miami had already announced the signings of Argentines Matías Pellegrini (midfielder) and Julián Carranza (for

ward); midfield and Venezuelan central defense Christian Makoun and the attacking midfielder George Acosta. All are 19 years old.

Inter also signed Canadian midfielder David Norman Jr., 21, of Vancouver Whitecaps FC.

Inter Miami begins play in March 2020. The team will play for now at its new Fort Lauderdale Stadium, which is being constructe­d at at the site of Lockhart Stadium, until the Miami stadium is ready.

Inter Miami CF announced today it has acquired the Homegrown Player Rights to goalkeeper Drake Callender from the

“Drake is a driven, young goalkeeper who impressed at the collegiate level both on and off the pitch,” said Inter Miami CF Sporting Director Paul McDonough. “We are pleased to trade for his Homegrown Rights and will explore him coming to South Florida sometime in the future.”

The 22-year-old currently plays NCAA Division I soccer at the University of California, Berkeley. He has played at the school for four years, making 52 appearance­s and keeping 15 clean sheets.

The 6-foot-3 goalkeeper was invited to the U.S. U-23 Men’s National Team training camp in September.

The training camp is part of the U.S.’s campaign to qualify for the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.
