Delray Beach Chorale has new season, look and name
After 37 years, the Delray Beach Chorale is undergoing an identity change in an attempt to broaden its reach across South Florida.
The newly named Schola Cantorum of South Florida trains young artists in the performance of new and existing songs. Returning artistic director and conductor Patricia P. Fleitas announced the 2019 and 2020 season recently.
“The 2019-2020 season theme is ‘A Musical Narrative,’ where we want to invite audiences to reflect with us on the text settings that describe human suffering, yet equally convey the power of perseverance, resilience and character,” Fleitas said in a statement. Performances include the following.
■ George Frideric Handel’s “Messiah,” Friday, Dec. 6 at 7 p.m. at Florida Atlantic University, 777 Glades Road, in the Carole and Barry Kaye Auditorium.
■ “Holidays With a Twist” on Saturday, Dec. 7 at 7:30 p.m. at Advent Church, 300 E. Yamato Road, with new takes on William Grant Still’s “Christmas in the Western World,” and Ron Kean’s “The Journey of Harriet Tubman,” set against marimba.
■ “Destiny’s Reason” on Saturday, April 25 at 7:30 p.m. at Advent Church, 300 E. Yamato Road with Jake Runestad’s “A
Silence Haunts Me,” based on Beethoven’s “Heiligenstadt Testament” and Karl Jenkins’ “Stabat Mater.”
“We aim to perform and educate singers of all ages from our after school youth choral program, young artists and artists in residence, who encompass our education program, to pre-professional educators and community members at large,” Fleitas said in a statement.
“‘Schola Cantorum,’ meaning, ‘school of singing,’ identifies our strive for excellence in performance through valuable choral education to honor our mission and vision.”
