OAKLAND PARK – The day after hitting and killing a pedestrian and ditching his Nissan on Oakland Park Boulevard, a 29-year-old man reported his car as stolen, the Broward Sheriff’s Office said.

Shrimaun Jadoo, 52, was run over about 8:45 p.m. Thursday as he tried to cross westbound Oakland Park Boulevard in the 2800 block, the Sheriff ’s Office said.

“As he stepped off the median, he walked into the path of an approaching Nissan Altima and was struck and killed,” said Keyla Concepcion, a sheriff’s spokeswoman. “The driver of the Altima exited the vehicle and fled.”

The 2008 Nissan was abandoned in the far right westbound lane of the boulevard and its driver ran away, according to the Sheriff ’s Office.

Jadoo, originally from Guyana, died at the scene. He was less than a half mile from his Oakland Park home on Northwest 28th Terrace, records show.

Nearly five years ago in May 2015, Jadoo was ticketed and fined, three miles west of where he died, for crossing Oakland Park Boulevard between crosswalks, Broward court records show.

Records show that he had also lived in Fort Lauderdale, as well as the Minnesota cities of St. Paul and Minneapolis.

On the night of the crash, detectives heard from a relative of Christopher Shuman, the car’s registered owner, Concepcion said.

The relative reported that “the vehicle had been stolen, with no date, time or location of when the supposed theft happened,” she said.

Detectives were unsuccessful in their efforts to reach Shuman until the next day when he showed up at BSO’s Pompano Beach substation to file a stolen vehicle report, the Sheriff’s Office said.

When questioned about inconsistencies in his story, Shuman admitted that he was the driver of the Altima when it hit and killed Jadoo, Concepcion said.

Shuman, 29, had been en route to his sister’s house when the crash happened. He told investigators that’s where he ran to.

Shuman’s arrest report says he was born in Fort Lauderdale, works at Pollo Tropical and lives on Northwest Sixth Street in Pompano Beach. His booking report says he lives on Northwest 19th Street in Lauderhill.

Broward court records show that Shuman was ticketed and fined in August for speeding. His citation says he drove a 2013 Hyundai at 35 mph in a 55 mph zone on Northwest 31st Avenue in Fort Lauderdale.

Shuman was booked into the Broward Main Jail at 6:19 p.m. Friday on a felony charge of failing to remain at the scene of a fatal accident and a misdemeanor count of driving on a suspended license.

A Broward judge on Monday set bond at $5,000. Shuman posted it and was freed Tuesday, records show.
