DeSantis enjoying sky-high approval
As he approaches his first anniversary in office, Gov. Ron DeSantis continues to enjoy stellar job approval from Florida voters.
A poll from Mason Dixon Polling & Strategy shows DeSantis with approval of 65% of the state’s voters.
Just 26% disapprove and 9% are unsure, Mason-Dixon found.
Statistically that’s unchanged from the 62% approval for DeSantis, when he was still in the honeymoon phase of his governorship. Elected in November 2018, he was sworn into office on Jan. 8, 2019.
Democrats are divided about the Republican governor’s performance, with 40% approval and 47% disapproval. That’s actually a strong showing for a prominent elected official of the opposite party, something Mason-Dixon said in its polling report was “very unusual in the current polarized political environment.”
He enjoys 93% approval among Republicans and 62% approval among independents.
Among other groups:
■ 70% approval among men
■ 61% among women
■ 69% among voters 50 and older
■ 59% among voters younger than 50
■ 71% among white voters
■ 42% among black voters
■ 56% among Hispanic voters
DeSantis is more popular than President Donald Trump in Florida, the poll found.
Trump’s approval among Florida voters is 47%, Mason-Dixon said, with 50% disapproving and 3% not sure.
Mason-Dixon said the partisan divide over the president is “extreme.” Among Republicans, 91% approve of Trump’s performance. Among Democrats, 91% disapprove of Trump’s performance.
Independents are more evenly divided, with 51% disapproving of the president’s performance and 46% approving.
Mason-Dixon surveyed 625 voters with live calls by phone from Dec. 11-16. The margin of error is plus or minus 4 percentage points. Breakdowns for smaller groups, such as Democrats, Republicans and independents, or men and women, have higher margins of error.
Pollster ratings from FiveThirtyEight.com give Mason-Dixon a B plus for its data gathering and accuracy.
