Hurricanes land FIU grad transfer kicker Borregales

- By David Furones

The Miami Hurricanes may have found their solution at place kicker for the 2020 season, and it’s someone who helped dish UM what is possibly its worst upset loss in program history.

Miami picked up the transfer of FIU’s Jose Borregales, the older brother of 2021 Miami commit Andres Borregales, as Jose announced on Twitter on Sunday morning.

“Blessed to be given this opportunity,” Borregales tweeted with a picture of him in a UM uniform that had the word “committed” under his name. “No matter the hate I’m ready to work.”

Borregales went 50 for 65 on field-goal attempts during his FIU career, including 21 for 29 in 2019.

Against UM last season in the Panthers’ stunning 30-24 win over the Hurricanes at Marlins Park on Nov. 23, Borregales had two of his three made field goals made come from beyond 50 yards.

In 2018 and 2017, respectively, the Miami Booker T. Washington High product was 14 of 18 and 15 of 18 on field goals. Borregales is FIU’s record holder for points (281).

With Andres Borregales, from Chaminade-Madonna, committed to UM in the 2021 recruiting class, the elder Borregales provides a oneyear stop-gap before his arrival in Coral Gables. The younger brother is the nation’s top-ranked kicker in his class, according to 247 Sports.

Andres Borregales expressed his excitement for his brother’s announcement by quote-tweeting it and adding, “The starts now.”

The Hurricanes needed help in the kicking game after a 2019 season where the team went 12 of 20 on field goals. Bubba Baxa was 5 for 10 on field goals, including three misses from within 30 yards, and also had two extra-point misses.

Walk-on Turner Davidson made one of his three field-goal tries once UM began to go away from Baxa. Fellow walk-on Camden Price provided some relief toward the end of the season when he connected on 6 of 7 field goals.

The place-kicking struggles were a major reason why UM started out with a 3-4 record as misses played a critical role in losses to Florida, North Carolina, Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech.
