Sublime’s cauliflower appetizer still a winner
Q: Many years ago, I believe the Sun Sentinel posted the recipe for the misto cristo from Sublime. It was a cauliflower dish with a crispy peppery coating on it. — AJ Grossman, Hollywood
A: I think AJ may be referring to the cauliflower fritto misto at Sublime Restaurant and Bar in Fort Lauderdale. The Sun Sentinel published the recipe back in 2007. The “peppery coating” may be confused with the black and white sesame seed garnish, as seen in the photo, although the home cook recipe calls for just white. A peppery kick in flavor is likely from the crushed red pepper in the chili sauce. Either way, the recipe is a winner if people are still talking about it long after the restaurant has closed.
The go-to vegan and vegetarian restaurant operated by devoted animal activist Nanci Alexander closed abruptly in 2018 after 15 years. She shut the doors with mixed feelings but ultimately knew it was time, as the physical drain of operating a restaurant began to take its toll on her. An uptick of contemporary plant-based restaurants in more casual environs competed with Alexander’s fine dining approach.
In its heyday, Sublime attracted visiting Hollywood celebs who praised the food, putting Sublime’s name and signature dishes on the map. The cauliflower fritto misto was one of those dishes, in addition to Sublime’s mushroom ravioli and coconut cake.
