Ex-Hurricanes Irvin transfers from Miami to FAU
Former Miami Hurricanes tight end Michael Irvin II will be staying in South Florida for his redshirt senior season.
Irvin, the son of the UM legend and NFL Hall of Fame wide receiver by the same name, announced on Monday night that Florida Atlantic will be his transfer destination after deciding he would move on from Miami in March.
Irivn, a St. Thomas Aquinas High grad like his father, heads to the Owls as a graduate transfer, immediately eligible for the upcoming season, FAU’s first under new coach Willie Taggart.
Irvin played in all 13 games for the Hurricanes last season, making three starts, but had only two catches for 33 yards. He missed all of the 2018 regular season recovering from a knee injury but played in the Pinstripe Bowl loss to Wisconsin.
Irvin had his best season at UM as a sophomore in 2017, when he had nine receptions for 78 yards. He played sparingly as a freshman in 2016 on special teams. His time with the Hurricanes ended in the one week Miami held spring football practices before the coronavirus pandemic put a stop to all college athletic activities. Not present for UM’s first two spring practices, Irvin announced he was entering the transfer portal by the third.
“I have had a riddled college football career so far which is why I have made this decision very carefully,” Irvin wrote on Twitter on Monday night. “With that being said, I have learned a lot and would not change my experience and the relationships I have made throughout the process. I’m thankful for everything that I have been able to do.
“After a number of discussions with family, we believe that I have been granted an opportunity that I can’t pass up. I have decided I will spend my last year playing
college football as an FAU Owl!”
FAU was in need of a tight end after John Mackey Award winner Harrison Bryant went to the NFL, a 2020 fourthround draft pick of the Cleveland Browns. The Owls also had John Raine transfer out to Northwestern.
Irvin will likely compete with redshirt freshman Rahmod Smith and redshirt junior Logan Peterson for tight end reps at FAU.
Joining safety Jeff James (Edgerrin James’ nephew), receiver Rahsaan Lewis (Ray Lewis’ son) and defensive lineman Warren Sapp II (Warren Sapp’s son), Irvin will be the fourth player on FAU’s roster with Hurricanes bloodlines.
Miami remains deep and talented at tight end — led by standout juniors Brevin Jordan and Will Mallory. Jordan, one of the other two Mackey Award finalists last season, was recovering from a foot injury as of the spring. The Hurricanes also have up-and-coming youngsters in redshirt freshman Larry Hodges and true freshman Dominic Mammarelli at tight end.
