- By Steve Svekis

Inter Miami CF announced late Thursday that one of its players had tested positive for COVID-19 after a round of club testing this week. Team officials did not reveal the identity of the player.

The soccer team said that its medical staff is working directly with local infectious disease specialists to treat the player, who was asymptomatic and has been observing isolation protocols since he selfidentified being in close contact with an individual who showed mild symptoms during a health screening questionnaire given to players daily.

The team’s release said that Inter Miami continues to consult with the CDC, local health authorities and Major League Soccer regarding testing and training guidelines, as well as with adhering to proper physical distancing and sanitization protocols in its facilities.

Inter Miami resumed fullteam workouts last week, and started training in small groups the first week of June.

Inter Miami is scheduled to come back from the pandemic shutdown on July 8 in Orlando against Orlando City SC as part of the league-wide MLS is Back tournament. While in Orlando, all MLS players would be sequestered in a resort with a rigorous testing protocol. The team did not say how or if this player’s positive test would affect those plans and whether/ when the player would travel to Orlando.

Inter Miami is not the only MLS team to have a player test positive for COVID-19. Players from Atlanta United, FC Dallas, D.C. United and the Philadelphia Union have also tested positive for coronavirus.
