Taking it to ‘The Crib’; ’Canes unveil new touchdown rings

CUTLER BAY – Miami Hurricanes players can represent “The Crib” when they take it to “The Crib” with their new Touchdown Rings that were revealed on Thursday night in the season opener againstUAB.

After UM debuted its pair of four-finger rings for the offense last season to complement the defense’s famedTurnover Chain, the Hurricanes now have an enhanced second installment that made its first appearance when Cam’Ron Harris scored on a 66-yardtouchdownrunin the first quarter.

Theoriginalssimply read“Hurricanes” when put together with knuckles from both fists. The new edition reads “The Crib” for the double meaning of the slang term for home, like South Florida is for so many UM players, and referencing a term commonly used for scoring a touchdown, “taking it to the crib.”

“We basically did something similar, but we want to keep it a little more 305, so we came out with the ‘The Crib,’” AJMachado, the jeweler behind all of the Hurricanes’ jewelry from the rings to the annual Turnover Chain, told the Sun Sentinel before shipping the rings over to UM. “That’s the saying. You say, ‘I took it all the way to the crib,’ a touchdown.”

The South Florida hometown theme backs up last season’s release of the Turnover Chain with Miami-Dade County’s area code of 305 on it. Machado likes how it ties into recruiting locally.

“We’re trying to keep everyone down here in the crib,” Machado said. “It’s all kind of mixed in together. We’re trying to keep it all here, all hometown.”

The gold rings each weigh 100 grams for 200 combined. The orange and green sapphires in the “The” ring amount to 829 stones while there are 1,096 in the “Crib” ring, according toMachado.

Machado likes that the offense got a second installment of the Touchdown Rings after the original, which had the same font and style, in 2019was a hit.

“The fans loved it, especially the players, a lot of the big offensive players, the running backs and especially the receivers,” Machado said. “All the hype of the

Turnover Chain, I felt like the offense needed something, and this is a nice little touch for them.”

While “The Crib” for UM is South Florida, Machado also wantsHurricanes fromelsewhere in the country to revel in it the sameway.

“They’re definitely crib,” he said.

Machado reiterated, after public confusion last year, that the Touchdown Rings are not brass knuckles.

“We got to knock someone out, we could,” he said, “but we’re just scoring touchdowns here.”
