Hobby the latest assistant coach to depart from staff
The Miami Dolphins have lost their second assistant coach in as many days following the end of their 2020 season.
The Dolphins announced Thursday they have mutually parted ways with defensive line coach Marion Hobby, who was a member of the staff for each of coach Brian Flores’ two seasons with the franchise.
Hobby, 54, played an instrumental role coaching Dolphins linemen such as defensive tackles Christian Wilkins, Raekwon Davis, and Zach Sieler and defensive ends Emmanuel Ogbah and Shaq Lawson.
The Dolphins job offered Hobby the opportunity to reunite with Wilkins and Lawson, whom he coached at Clemson, during his third stint as an NFL assistant.
Hobby was one of the Dolphins’ assistant coaches who joined Flores’ staff before the 2019 season.
Although Flores and Hobby never worked together before, Dolphins general manager Chris Grier had a previous relationship with him.
Hobby was a Patriots defensive lineman from 1990- 92, during the time Grier’s father, Bobby, was coaching running backs for the team.
Now the Dolphins will look to either hire or promote another coach to the second vacant position on Flores’ coaching staff this offseason.
On Wednesday, offensive coordinator Chan Gailey resigned from his post just one day after his 69th birthday.
Gailey was hired out of a three- year retirement to reunite with veteran backup Ryan Fitzpatrick and coach rookie quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, but Gailey lasted just one season.
It was Gailey’s second stint with Miami as offensive coordinator, his first coming during the 2000 and 2001 seasons.
Only five assistant coaches who first joined Flores when he was hired in 2019 remain.
Defensive coordinator Josh Boyer, special teams coach Danny Crossman and assistant defensive line coach Rob Leonard are still with the staff, as are tight ends coach George Godsey and running backs coach Eric Studesville, who could be in- house candidates for the vacant offensive coordinator job.
