Former UCF defensive coordinator Randy Shannon has joined Mike Norvell’s coaching staff at Florida State as a defensive analyst.

“Randy Shannon is a tremendous addition to our staff,” Norvell said. “I have all the respect in the world for the person and coach Randy Shannon is. His unique perspective will be valuable to Coach Fuller and the rest of our defensive staff, while his relationships in Miami and throughout the state of Florida will be a great benefit for our entire program.”

A veteran coach of nearly three decades, Shannon spent the past three seasons guiding the Knights’ defense. He was named interim coach of the program after Josh Heupel left to become head coach at Tennessee Jan. 27, but wasn’t retained after new coach Gus Malzahn was hired Feb. 15.

Shannon had signed a new two-year contract extension at UCF last February that paid him an annual salary of $1 million.

In his three seasons at UCF, the Knights were ranked No. 93 (2018), No. 32 (2019) and No. 123 (2020) in total defense.

He previously worked at Florida as defensive coordinator from 2015-17. He also served as interim head coach for four games in 2017 after Jim McElwain was fired.

Shannon played linebacker at Miami from 1985-88 before eventually moving into a coaching role in 1991. He was named head coach of the Hurricanes in 2007, accumulating a 28-22 overall record in four seasons.

FSU is coming off a disappointing 3-9 campaign in 2020, one that saw the Seminoles finish No. 107 in the country in total defense after allowing 456 yards per game.
