Team plans week of service, events to remember Juneteenth
The Miami Marlins are set to hold numerous community activities from June 19-27 for Juneteenth Week of Reflection and Service.
“The week of reflection, service and celebration promotes the organization’s efforts for racial equality and raises funds to help further the development of the community’s future leaders,” the team said in a press release.
On Saturday, Juneteenth Service Day, the Marlins will host four events throughout the community.
In partnership with Million Trees Miami, Verizon and Arbor Day Foundation, there will be a beautification project and tree and plant giveaway at Historic Hampton House in Miami. Volunteers from the Marlins and Verizon will distribute 500 trees, beginning at 9 a.m. until supplies last. Cliff Floyd, a former Marlins outfielder, will be joined by volunteers from the team’s front office to wash windows, tend to landscaping and paint entry gates and fences.
A beautification project and drive-thru food distribution in partnership with J.P. Morgan will take place at Miami’s Gwen Cherry Park at 9 a.m.. Former Marlins catcher Charles Johnson and volunteers from the Marlins and Verizon will paint classrooms, mulch the grounds and clean up trash around the park.
Players in the Marlins’ minorleague system will come together to build a playhouse and beautify a kids playground at the Achievement Center in Delray Beach.
The last event will be a Hydroponic Educational Experience at
Red Rooster Overtown.
Teens from local community centers will learn about the hydroponic garden at the restaurant. They will be able to sample a dish prepared with ingredients from the garden.
The Marlins’ community efforts will continue June 21. Volunteers from the Marlins will prepare more than 500 hygiene kits, which will include an assortment of selfcare items for the Miami Rescue Mission to distribute to those in need.
Those wanting to join in on the Marlins’ efforts can participate in the Empowering Education through Art Auction, benefiting a scholarship endowment from the Miami Marlins Foundation at Florida International University for first-generation students from the 5000 Role Models of Excellence Project. The Miami Marlins
Foundation has partnered with local artists to donate their time and collaborate on artwork with the theme of social justice. The Marlins provided baseball materials, including balls, bats, helmets and more for the artists to use as their canvas.
