English tops Hickok on 8th hole of playoff

-

Harris English birdied the eighth hole of sudden death to win the Travelers Championship on Sunday in Cromwell, Connecticut, beating Kramer Hickok after both birdied the final hole of regulation to force the playoff.

It matched the second-longest suddendeath playoff in PGA Tour history.

English shot a 5-under 65 to finish regulation at 13 under, then made a 5-foot putt on the seventh trip down the 18th hole of the day. Hickok had missed a 36-foot birdie putt and finished the playoff with eight consecutive pars.

It was the second win this year and the fourth career victory for English, who finished third at the U.S. Open last week.

U.S. Ryder Cup captain Steve Stricker won the Seniors Players Championship at Fireston in Akron, Ohio, for his second victory of the year and third senior major title. Stricker, 54, closed with an even-par 70 for a six-stroke victory over defending champ and close friend Jerry Kelly. ... Viktor Hovland held off a final-round charge from two-time major champ Martin Kaymer of Germany at the BMW Championship in Munich to become the first Norwegian winner of a European Tour event. The 23-year-old Hovland (70), a two-time winner on the PGA Tour, beat Kaymer (64) by two shots.

Soccer: Belgium beat 2016 champ Portugal 1-0 to advance to the quarterfinals of the European Championship. Thorgan Hazard scored the winning goal in the 42nd minute with a shot from outside the area. Kevin De Bruyne suffered an ankle injury and Eden Hazard a muscle injury in the win, putting their availability in doubt for the team’s match against Italy on Friday in Munich. In other action, Tomas Holes and Patrik Schick scored second-half goals to give the Czech Republic a 2-0 victory over 10-man Netherlands and a place in the quarterfinals. The Czechs next face Denmark on Saturday in Baku, Azerbaijan.
