DANIA BEACH — A Davie man accused of hitting three people in a deadly hit-andrun told deputies he drove home to call his mother before returning to the crash site three hours later in a different car.

Authorities say Robier Font Osaba, 20, drove off without stopping after he hit three pedestrians — including a stranded motorist — in 3800 block of Griffin Road in Dania Beach on Feb. 26, 2020.

That night, two people in a white Chevy van had stopped in the median to assist another driver who had run out of gas in the left lane. All three were standing in the middle lane at 12:02 a.m. when Osaba hit them and kept driving, the arrest report stated.

Osaba was arrested Monday and taken to the Broward Jail.

According to the arrest report, Osaba told deputies he didn’t see the pedestrians he hit because he had fallen asleep while driving. He said he was awakened by the sound of the impact and fled because he was nervous.

The victims were taken to Memorial Regional Hospital in critical condition. One never regained consciousness and died nine days after the crash. The two others were seriously injured, according to the Broward Sheriff ’s Office.

Several hours after the crash, Osaba went back to Griffin Road and told deputies where they could find his beige 2017 Honda Accord LX.

Investigators determined the damage to Osaba’s Honda was consistent with the collision. Osaba, who made his first court appearance Tuesday, is charged with failure to stop/remain at an accident involving death and failure to stop/remain at an accident involving serious injury. His bond was set at $125,000.
