Rahm, McIlroy, Burns share lead at BMW
World No. 1 and U.S. Open winner Jon Rahm, two-time FedEx Cup champion Rory McIlroy and Sam Burns each shot an opening-round 8-under 64 to take a one-shot lead over former Masters champion Sergio Garcia at the BMW Championship.
The tournament outside of Baltimore is the PGA Tour’s second of three playoff events.
College basketball: Memphis coach Penny Hardaway added 16-year NBA veteran Rasheed Wallace, 46, as an assistant. The announcement comes a day after five-star Emoni Bates announced his commitment to Memphis for the upcoming season. The 6-foot-8 guard has been called a generational talent and is projected as the No. 1 overall pick when he becomes eligible for the NBA draft after he turns 19 in 2023.
College football: LSU and USC will open the 2024 season in Las Vegas, a matchup of teams that both staked claim to the 2003 national championship. The Tigers and Trojans will play in the Vegas Kickoff Classic during Labor Day weekend in 2024 at Allegiant Stadium in a game to be aired on ABC or ESPN.
NFL: Giants RB Saquon Barkley took the next step in his return from a torn ACL in his right knee when he participated in live drills during Thursday’s joint practices with the Patriots. His status for the Giants’ season opener Sept. 12 against the Broncos remains unclear.
NHL: The Flyers signed center Sean Couturier to an eight-year contract extension worth $62 million . ... The Hurricanes and right wing Andrei Svechnikov, 21, agreed to an eight-year, $62 million contract.
Soccer: Real Madrid submitted a second, improved offer of $212 million to Paris Saint-Germain for 22-year-old forward Kylian Mbappe, ESPN reported. An initial $188 million bid was rejected Tuesday.
