Make sure you’re registered to vote in the Aug. 23 primary election — before it’s too late.

The last day to register to vote is Monday, July 25, and it’s a good idea not to wait until the last minute. Sign up “ideally before Monday, as soon as possible,” urged Ivan Castro, Broward’s Supervisor of Elections’ spokesman.

If voters want to change their party affiliation, July 25 also is the last day to do that so they can vote in their party’s races for the primary.

People who want to register to vote, or update their party affiliation, may visit the state’s website at Registertovoteflorida.gov.

Voters also may register in person. In Broward, people can visit the Supervisor’s office in downtown Fort Lauderdale within the County Governmental Center, 115 S. Andrews Ave. in Fort Lauderdale; or at a county library.

In Palm Beach County, registration can be done in person at the Supervisor’s Office at 240 S. Military Trail in West Palm Beach.

Among the races and issues being decided in August:

„ Judgeships in both Broward and Palm Beach counties, which are nonpartisan elections open to all voters.

„ There are 22 candidates vying for six available seats for Broward’s School Board. School Board seats are open in Palm Beach County, which includes many newcomers.

„ A handful of Broward County commission seats are also up for grabs. In Palm Beach County, one commission seat will go to voters during the primary.

„ In Broward, there is a school property tax referendum on the August ballot. If voters approve, the tax would increase from $50 to $100 per $100,000 of assessed property. If it fails, property owners would no longer pay the $50 tax in place now and the district would lose $115 million a year in revenues.
