Actor named Indy 500 grand marshal

Stephanie Beatriz, who starred as Detective Rosa Diaz on the TV show “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” and voiced Madrigal in the Oscar-winning film “Encanto,” will serve as the grand marshal for the Indianapol­is 500 later this month.

The track announced Tuesday that the awardwinni­ng actor, who will star in the upcoming show “Twisted Metal,” will walk the Indy 500 red carpet May 28 before giving the command for drivers to report to their cars.

“Stephanie brings a fresh energy and excitement to pre-race ceremonies that both spectators at the track and everyone watching on NBC and Peacock will appreciate,” said Indianapol­is Motor Speedway President J. Douglas Boles.

Country music star Blake Shelton served as the Indy 500 grand marshal last year.

Jolie unveils fashion venture:

Angelina Jolie announced a new fashion venture Wednesday aimed at allowing customers to participat­e in the making of their own creations with master tailors, pattern makers and artisans around the world while keeping discarded fabric out of landfills.

The actor, director and former special envoy for the United Nations’ refugee agency said on Instagram and the new website of Atelier Jolie that the project will make use of deadstock fabric and vintage materials.

The project hopes to “help share the richness of their cultural heritage and support the developmen­t of their own businesses,” Jolie posted on the brand’s site. In addition, customers will be able to repair or upcycle pieces from their closets as a way to eliminate waste.

Oakland street to be named for Shakur:

The late Tupac Shakur will have a stretch of an Oakland, California, street renamed for him after a unanimous vote by the city council Tuesday.

Shakur was born in New York City’s Harlem and later lived in Baltimore and Marin City, California, but credited Oakland as the location where he got his “game” and launched his career, according to legislatio­n authorizin­g the commemorat­ive street renaming.

A stretch of MacArthur Boulevard by Lake Merritt where Shakur once lived will keep its existing name, but also receive the additional, honorary name of Tupac Shakur Way. Commemorat­ive plaques and signs will be paid for by the Tupac Shakur Foundation.

Shakur was killed in a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas in 1996 at age 25.

Brooks extend Vegas residency:

Ahead of its opening night Thursday, country music star Garth Brooks said his Las Vegas residency has been extended with 18 additional dates next year.

Tickets for “Garth Brooks/Plus One” at Caesars Palace sold out quickly when they went on sale in late 2022. Fans who missed out on tickets will receive early access to the 2024 dates before tickets go on sale May 31. The 2024 shows are scheduled between April and July.
