Former Seahawks player joins staff
The Miami Dolphins are hiring former Seattle Seahawks defensive backturned-coach DeShawn Shead to the coaching staff, according to a league source.
Shead is bound to take on the position of assistant defensive backs coach, the source said.
That means the roles of beloved former Dolphins cornerback Sam Madison as cornerbacks coach and Joe Kasper as safeties coach remain open.
It was learned Madison and the team parted ways Saturday, as it also came to light that Miami hired Brian Duker as secondary coach and pass-game coordinator to replace Renaldo Hill.
Shead’s position is below Duker and the hires for the voids of Madison and Kasper.
Shead was a backup defensive back and special teams contributor on the Seahawks’ “Legion of Boom” defenses of a decade ago, then started at cornerback in 2016.
He was a rookie on the 2013 Super Bowl-winning Seahawks team, and Seattle was runner-up in his second NFL season.
He spent his first five years as a player with the Seahawks, then was with the Detroit Lions in 2018 before splitting time in Seattle and with the New Orleans Saints in 2019 despite not getting into a game.
The former player has been coaching with the Seahawks for the past three seasons as a defensive assistant and assistant defensive backs coach.
Shead is at least the Dolphins’ fifth new defensive assistant in the 2024 coach hiring cycle, along with new defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver, linebackers coach Joe Barry, outside linebackers coach Ryan Crow and Duker.
Weaver replaced Vic Fangio. Barry came in as Campanile went to the Green Bay Packers.
Crow took over Ryan Slowik’s former position, but Slowik is staying on staff in a position yet to be determined. It could possibly be as cornerbacks coach or safeties coach, where there is a vacancy from Kasper following Fangio to the Philadelphia Eagles.
