Southland Conference suspends 8 for brawl

The Southland Conference suspended eight players Wednesday for their involvemen­t in a big brawl that followed the men’s basketball game between Texas A&M-Commerce and Incarnate Word on Monday night.

The fight, which broke out during the handshake line after Texas A&M-Commerce’s 76-72 OT victory, lasted for more than a minute. It’s unclear what sparked the fight.

Texas A&M-Commerce’s Jerome Brewer Jr., Ant Abraham and Kwo Agwa were suspended for three games, while teammate Prince Davies received a one-game ban.

For Incarnate Word, guard Elijah Davis was handed a three-game suspension. Alex Anderson, Gabe Beny Til and Marcus Glover were each suspended two games.

Baseball: 1B Eric Hosmer retired following a 13-year career that included winning four Gold Gloves and helping lead the Royals to victory in the 2015 World Series. The 34-yearold Hosmer was released by the Cubs on May 25. Hosmer was named the MVP in his lone All-Star Game appearance in 2016.

Soccer: Wenderson Galeno scored in stoppage time to give Porto a 1-0 home win over Arsenal in the first leg of the round of 16 of the Champions League. In the day’s other first leg, Barcelona and host Napoli played to a 1-1 draw.

Tennis: World No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz announced on social media that he’ll need just a few days off after spraining his right ankle in his first-round match at the Rio Open on Tuesday but otherwise his prognosis is positive.

Also: Freestyle motocross athlete Jayden “Jayo” Archer, an X Games medalist and the first rider to perform a triple backflip in competitio­n, died while practicing the trick in his hometown of Melbourne, Australia. He was 27.
