More than 350 runners, walkers and joggers lined up on October 11 to take part in the 5K Run/Walk to benefit Aid to Victims of Domestic Violence, Inc. (AVDA) of Palm Beach County. The organization, which serves survivors of domestic abuse and their families, raised nearly $50,000 at its signature fundraiser run along A1A in Delray Beach.

AVDA is a non-profit organization that has been providing support to survivors of domestic violence for the past 20 years. Emergency shelter, a 24-hour hotline, transitional housing, legal advocacy, and counseling are some of the services offered to adult and child survivors. Just as AVDA’s services reach the whole family so did its 5K event, which included a Family Fun Mile Race and a Kids’ Race for children 6 and under.

The first runners to cross the finish line of the 5K were Natasha Yaremczyk of Boca Raton in the women’s category and Paul Ambrose in the men’s category. During a special moment of the winners’ ceremony, two young runners – Kylee Ring and Zak Fletcher – donated the bikes they had just won in the AVDA raffle back to the organization. Held in Anchor Park, the scenic event also featured Tim Byrd “The Byrdman” of KOOL 105.5 for the first time as emcee and honorary chair.

“It was an exciting day for AVDA; the awareness brought new eyes and ears to a problem that needs support,” said Byrd.

AVDA’s 5K Run/Walk 2008 was generously sponsored by Woolbright Development Corporation, Anne and Peter Vesgo, Tammy and Greg Babij, St. Paul Episcopal of Delray Beach, CorpSource Solutions, Fitness for Women (Boca Raton), Palm Beach Commissioner Addie L. Greene, the City of Delray Beach, the Daughters of Penelope Leda Chapter 59, Miller Physical Therapy, Lifecare Home Health Services, Raymond James Financial Boca Raton office, Stacy Linton/Linton Real Estate, Ocean City Properties and the Police Department of Delray Beach.

AVDA’s next event will be its spring ‘Heart of a Woman’ luncheon, planned for 11 a.m. on February 12, 2009 at the Royal Palm Yacht Club in Boca Raton, featuring noted author Gail Sheehy. Tickets are $100; tables of 10 are available.
