Seminoles’ O-line eager to regroup

- Brendan Sonnone

TALLAHASSEE — FSU’s offensive line met its match against USF, a week after easily handling an undersized Texas State defensive front.

The inexperienced group — 14 combined starts among the first-team unit — had difficulty with a talented USF defensive line that averaged nearly 280 pounds per starter Saturday.

USF sacked Everett on three occasions (two in the first half ) and hurried him three more times, applying pressure on FSU’s quarterback on 23 percent of his passing attempts. The Bulls also regularly clogged rushing lanes, although running back (30 carries, 266 yards) clearly negated some of those issues by taking advantage of small creases and a few of the occasional gaping holes the line created.

“We weren’t picking up the stunts so he [Golson] was getting pressure,” said left tackle the anchor of FSU’s line. “He needs time to read the defense, read his keys on defense. As an offensive line, we weren’t picking up the blitz in time enough. We need to do a better job of that.”

Despite the early struggles, coach considered switching out any of his starters.

“If you start doing that, you destroy everything,” Fisher said. “You’ve got to have confidence in these guys. You coached them, you put them in there, you’ve got to fix things.”
