Police arrest two car burglary suspects

- — Tonya Alanez

A Coral Springs officer caught two car burglars in the act early Monday thanks to an alert resident who called police after spotting two men trying car door handles in the parking lot of his apartment complex, authorities said.

William Fontez, 18, was getting out of a white Kia van and Alexander Montalvo, 20, was rummaging through its glove box when police arrived at Sabal Point Apartments, 12100 W. Sample Road, a police report said.

Fontez and Montalvo both live about a mile away from the complex, records show.

When Officer Bryan Wilkins arrived at the scene at 3:14 a.m., he contacted the caller, who directed Wilkins to the van. The caller’s name was redacted from the police report.

The two men were ordered not to move and were searched. Fontez had a pair of Fossil sunglasses, various electronics and a knife with a glass punch in his pockets. Montalvo had $1.50 in coins, the report said.

Nearby, Wilkins spotted a black Toyota Corolla with its interior light on and its glove box open. The owner of that vehicle confirmed that the Fossil sunglasses belonged to him, the report said.

Fontez and Montalvo are being held in the Broward Main Jail. Each has been charged with two counts of burglary and two counts of petty theft. Fontez faces an additional charge of possession of burglary tools.
